Birmingham Family Photography
One of the most important things a photographer can do, in my opinion, is capture the dynamics of relationships in our photographs. Speaking for myself, I want the viewer to get a sense of the relationship and a general feel of each personality. In order to accomplish this, I find that it is critical to allow my subjects to be themselves in front of the camera…that begins well before I pick up my camera. Spending time with each person in the family before the session allows me to get to know them and just as important, for them to get to know and trust me. It absolutely makes my day when, at the end of the session, I am told how much fun everyone had or that they never expected a portrait session to be so easy. The end of this session was extra special…the younger son picked a flower for me! I’m still smiling about that.
Earlier this month the Wester family came to Helena from Tuscaloosa for a family session. Ellen told me that they hadn’t had a family photograph taken in years and the last professional photos of the boys were when they were both very young. I had a feeling that the three guys were not excited about having their pictures taken; however, this series was made about 15 minutes after we started. As you can see, they certainly loosened up and enjoyed themselves! Ellen came last night to view the proofs, and she and I agreed that this series has to go on the wall.
