B&W Photo Exhibit
On Monday, May 20, I was honored to be the featured artist for The Harbert Center in downtown Birmingham! The Executive Director, Chandrel Wright-Richardson, loved the idea of my “Come As You Are” – A Portrait Project with Gretchen B so much that she came to the studio to be photographed and to be part of my project!
“Come As You Are” started as a challenge on Facebook – come into the studio as you are for a 30-minute session where your photo will be used to show how fabulous you are everyday – not overly dressed or made up, just “Come As You Are!” I had the prints made and mounted on 30″x45″ boards (thank you, AlphaGraphics!) with easel backs for easy display. The prints are black and white because color is distracting, and I wanted to the focus to be on the subject’s expression and body language. Most of the women featured in magazines are very young and have been edited to perfection. Showing a woman her beauty just as she is every day is empowering to her. The series of 18 photographs features women from all ages, sizes, and ethnicity. The photographs of these women – the way each one holds her own space – tell us all we need to know about how she feels about herself. I trust that the viewers will see in these images women who are strong, confident, and beautiful.
Several of the women gave their “why” they participated which I’ve included for you. Each and every one is so different and all are interesting! I’ve also provided you with the names and images of each of the women. It is a project that I’ve loved doing and have ideas for more and different projects for the near future!
There were approximately 40 guests in attendance, and the images will be on display until Friday, May 31, 2019. I took just a few photos during the event – hard to be the photographer and the exhibitor at the same time! Please enjoy this short (very short!) slideshow.
