Posing HS Senior Guys
Some moms have expressed an interest in getting senior photos of their sons only to be met with resistance from said sons. In an effort to show these guys and others that photography for guys is just as important (and fun!) as it is for the girls. Creating images of young men that show their interests and their personalities is as much about connecting with them as it is the technical skills behind the camera. As the mother of two children – one of each gender – it is easy for me to create an atmosphere where the guys feel comfortable and at ease. Check out some of the photos below–you will see how much fun a guy photo session can be! I have posted a video to my YouTube channel of the guys so be sure to check it out!
In posing guys, it’s important to show them to be masculine by being particular about hand placement and head tilts relative to shoulders. Guys heads should always tilt to their low shoulder – girls can tilt toward either a high or low shoulder but a tilt to the high shoulder is always a feminine pose. The lighting on guys can be more harsh than when lighting girls. It is still important to get light into the eyes and avoid harsh shadows beside the nose and under the chin. Although a nice smile in a photo is appropriate, I always strive to get a few images that are a bit more pensive. Personally, I find those to be more interesting to view than a broad smile especially if the image is being considered for wall art.
